Oil on canvas

Gary Lawrence undertook a BA in fine art at Portsmouth Polytechnic and an MA in fine art at Eastern Illinois University. His work has been seen in exhibitions in the UK and USA and has been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (1984, 2016) and the Jerwood Drawing Prize London (2011, 2013, 2015).

The portrait is of the artist’s father, Bob. Gary Lawrence says: ‘My dad used to like racing and would sit with his copy of the Daily Mirror checking the horses’ form to pick the winners. One day, as he was concentrating, I quickly started the painting.’
