Oil on canvas

Charles Moxon gained a BA (Hons) degree
in painting at Camberwell College, University
of the Arts, London. Since graduating, his work
has been seen in group exhibitions in London,
New York and in a solo exhibition and residency
in Lux Art Institute, California.

The portrait is of Harriet Harman, MP for Camberwell
and Peckham whom Moxon approached to sit for
a portrait after meeting her in 2013. The sittings took
place in her office in Westminster, the addition
of the Camberwell Beauty butterfly is a reference
to her constituency. Moxon’s technique uses
layers of translucent glazes and is influenced by
seventeenth-century northern European painting.
