This exhibition is a significant addition to an important new area of photographic history. It looks for the first time at the broad social and cultural context for the development of portrait photography in the nineteenth century. International loans together with key images from the National Portrait Gallery, explore the social significance of the face in areas as diverse as crime, science and celebrity.
A book by Peter Hamilton and Roger Hargreaves accompanies the exhibition priced £15.95 paperback.
