King Henry VIII; King Henry VII
by Hans Holbein the Younger
circa 1536-1537
NPG 4027

One of the most popular and powerful kings of England. A part of his popularity was due to his numerous marriages. Love caused him to break with the Catholic Church. Two divorces, two charges of adultery and two executions. This talk wants to answer one specific question: why did Henry VIII have so many wives?

Portrait of the Day talks are given by members of the Gallery's Visitor Services Team and last for up to 30 minutes. Talks are subject to change so please call 0207 306 0055 on the day or check signage in the Gallery.
