Born into a family of actors, Ellen Terry came to be known as one of the leading Shakespearean actresses of her day, gaining fame as Portia in The Merchant of Venice with Henry Irving's company. With the advent of the film industry Terry continued acting well into her seventies, before retiring to Smallhythe Place where she died in 1928. Talk led by Emma Burgess.
