Curator Jane Eade and Research Conservator Polly Saltmarsh discuss new research into Tudor and Stuart miniatures in the Gallery’s Collection. This talk shares insights from a project by the Gallery to analyse its early miniatures (1500-1620) using a stereomicroscope, and the astonishingly detailed images that were captured as a result. Using case studies, it explores the question of how miniatures were painted and the techniques of renowned miniaturists such as Nicholas Hilliard (1547-1619) and Isaac Oliver (1565-1617).
