King Charles I

With Sarah Birt

Charles I was a complex character, only made heir to the throne after his brother Prince Henry died in 1612. His policies as king alienated many of his subjects and plunged England, Scotland and Ireland into civil war in 1642. This talk will give an overview of his life and highlight the connections that Charles I had with the area surrounding the National Portrait Gallery, such as his involvement with building projects in Covent Garden and his subsequent execution at the Banqueting Hall in Whitehall.
