Octavia Hill
by John Singer Sargent
1899
NPG 1746
Octavia Hill was a ninteenth century housing and social reformer who created housing schemes for the urban poor. In addition to this she campaigned to protect and retain open spaces in the United Kingdom and was one of the founders of the National Trust. Her accomplishments have led to Westminster Abbey marking the centennial anniversary of her death (she died on 13 August 1912) by dedicating a memorial to her.
