This weekend-long workshop is an opportunity to work with portrait artist Toby Wiggins and learn about how he approaches portraiture.
The weekend will start with an introduction to Toby’s work and will discuss the timetable for the workshop. You will then have a tour of the BP Portrait Award Exhibition led by Toby, highlighting works of interest to you in terms of technique, style and approach. Toby will also select some of his highlights of the Collection for you examine. When you are back in the studio you will be able to start the creative process with a series of experimental drawing exercises on mark making and composition. Working from a model, the afternoon’s activity will focus on handling paint and how to describe form and light from colours on your palette.
The second day will concentrate on painting the portrait. Toby will be able to offer advice and tips on painting portraits and you will be able to use this advice in your own work after the weekend finishes. At the end of the second day you will have a group discussion on the paintings you have started and can discuss the best techniques and approaches to portraiture. You will be able to take away a new confidence and new skills for painting portraits.
Suitable for over 18s, materials and refreshments are provided.
