To commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War, The Portrait Choir has commissioned four talented young British composers to create new pieces inspired by the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection and Archive.
The new works by James Burton, Will Dutta, Benedict Giles and Richard Wilberforce draw on images, letters and newspaper clippings, as well as the Gallery’s exhibition of The Great War in Portraits, and cover topics ranging from darkness and silence to air raids and tea. The pieces will be interspersed with Tomas Luis de Victoria’s poignant Requiem.
The Portrait Choir is supported by Hani Farsi and the Mohamed S. Farsi Foundation.
