Historian David Scott examines the men and ideas that inspired the 'first' British Empire of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He will examine three groups of men: the buccaneers and colonial adventurers who wanted a great empire and state such as Ralegh, Drake and the Earl of Warwick; the men who actually built this state such as Cromwell and the men like William Pitt the Elder who used that empire and state to confirm Britain’s status before the American War of Independence.
