Charlotte was also the only child and legitimate heir to the throne to be borne of the ill-fated marriage between George IV and Caroline of Brunswick. She married Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg in 1816 and enjoyed only a few months of happiness before she died in childbirth the following year. Public grief at her death was heightened by the universal scorn felt for the rest of the royal family.

Portrait of the Day talks are given by members of the Gallery's Visitor Services Team and last for up to 30 minutes. Talks are subject to change so please call 0207 306 0055 on the day or check signage in the Gallery.
