Calligrapher Ewan Clayton, author of The Golden Thread: The History of Writing, leads this practical workshop. He takes inspiration from the sixteenth century inscriptions found on many of the paintings of the time and in particular from the work of Scottish miniaturist and calligrapher Esther Kello (neé Inglis). This one day workshop includes a tour of the Elizabeth & Her People led by Ewan and carefully staged instruction in the italic hand which was one of the sixteenth century's great contributions to the art of writing - it is still in use today. Materials will be provided, the workshop is suitable to all ages.
Ewan Clayton, is a calligrapher who likes to work with his fellow penman of all ages and abilities from beginners to those with considerable experience. He is Professor in Design at the University of Sunderland where he co- directs the International Centre for Research in Calligraphy.
