Inspired by a visit to the Bath Blues Festival, Michael Eavis and his wife Jean, staged the first Glastonbury Festival in 1970 in the grounds of their 600 acre Worthy Farm at Pilton in Somerset. The festival thrived throughout the 1970s and has become more ambitious in the terms of scale and participants. Glastonbury is now considered one of the most prestigious of festival bookings. Eavis selects many of the acts himself and after the death of his wife in 1999, his daughter Emily has increasingly assisted.

The 2007 festival, held on 22 - 24 June, includes performances by the Arctic Monkeys, Dame Shirley Bassey and the Who. The 137,500 tickets for the weekend sold out in just 90 minutes.
