World Champion track cyclist and former World Champion rower. Born in Surrey to an English mother and Spanish father, Romero began rowing, while studying for her A-Levels. In the Athens 2004 Olympics Romero won a silver medal in the Quadruple Sculls and was part of the British crew that won the 2005 World Championships. On retirement from rowing Romero was approached by British Cycling and in April 2006 began training as a track cyclist, specialising in endurance events, winning a gold medal at her first Cycling World Championships in March 2007. At the Beijing Olympics Romero won a gold medal in the Individual Pursuit becoming first British athlete to win medals in different sports at the Summer Olympics.
Photographed for the Beijing Olympics Powerade advertising campaign, Kander's image of Romero was inspired by Annie Leibovitz's 1999 study of American road racing cyclist Lance Armstrong. Israeli-born, award-winning photographer Kander moved to London in the 1980s and is a contributor to publications including The Sunday Times Magazine and The New York Times Magazine and regularly exhibits his work.
