The BP Portrait Award is the most prestigious portrait competition in the world, promoting the very best in contemporary portrait painting. From intimate and personal images of friends and family, to revealing portraits of celebrity sitters, the exhibition presents a variety of styles and approaches that together illustrate the vitality of contemporary portrait painting.

Dame Laura Knight (1877–1970) was one of the most popular and pioneering British artists of the twentieth century. The first full female member of the Royal Academy since the eighteenth century, Knight became famous for her backstage depictions of actors and dancers while being particularly drawn to portraying marginal social groups.
