DJ Edward Otchere
An introduction to the crepuscular sounds of Soho, this season DJ Edward Otchere creates a sonic backdrop to Lucian Freud’s nightlife in six movements.
The series starts tonight with an evening dedicated to the jazz of Soho – from late nights in Ronnie Scott’s and early mornings in Bar Italia, to the progressive dance floor jazz of the 1970s.
In the weeks to follow you can hear an eclectic take on Cole Porter’s classics, a favourite composer of Freud. Otchere will delve into the sounds of chanteuse from the 1950s and 1960s in an evening dedicated to the allure of the female voice. One of Freud’s most identifiable sitters will provide inspiration for a set exploring decadence and freedom. This homage to the creativity of Freud’s muse Leigh Bowery will encapsulate chic sounds curated from a set of 80’s ballroom disco classics. The series will conclude with an evening inspired by Freud’s passion for the music of Johnny Cash.
The DJ
Every fortnight, our resident DJ Edward Otchere creates a carefully crafted themed soundscape. He plays a strictly vinyl set, drawing from his huge collection. He’s passionate about sourcing pressings from all over the world, to find the best examples of the rich sonic qualities of analogue recordings.
Otchere has been skillfully distilling 20th century musical masterpieces since his first residency at the BBC’s Bush House Club in the early noughties to his more recent performances at Brunswick House Cafe. He has provided soundscapes for audacious venues such as SupperClub, Chinawhite and currently transmits a weekly show on Hoxton.fm.
