To celebrate the Gallery’s publication of a new guide to the highlights of the Collection,  Sandy Nairne, Director of the Gallery, and Dr Tarnya Cooper, Chief Curator, discuss the history of the Gallery and the development of the Collection through time. They will look at defining moments in Gallery history, outline the acquisition criteria and selection processes and share some stories around the development of the Collection. Sandy Nairne will give his personal selection of definitive acquisitions since the Gallery’s foundation in 1856. 

Sandy Nairne is Director of the National Portrait Gallery and was formerly Director: Programmes at Tate. He has written extensively on contemporary portraiture and modern art.
