Philippe Garner, International Head of Photographs at Christie’s, and Martin Barnes, Senior Curator of Photographs at the V&A discuss Man Ray. They will consider his techniques and relationships with his sitters. They will also discuss how his work compares with other portrait artists of the time and how it connects with Surrealism.
Philippe Garner is a Director of Christie’s and the firm’s International Head of Photographs and 20th Century Decorative Art & Design. He has directed and been closely involved in a wide variety of prestigious sales, including The Estate of Juliet Man Ray in London in 1995. Significant recent monographic auctions have included Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Internationally acknowledged as a distinguished authority in his fields, Mr. Garner has curated exhibitions and published books, articles and essays on the decorative arts, design and photography.
Martin Barnes is Senior Curator of Photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He works on the Photography Gallery at the V&A which draws exhibitions from the Museum's national collection of the art of photography. He has been the V&A curator for various exhibitions including Photography in the Magic Hour and Camera-less Photography. He has written articles and essays on various contemporary photographers for publications and journals including Aperture and Portfolio, entries for The Folio Society Book of the 100 Greatest Photographs and the Encyclopaedia of Nineteenth Century Photography.
