For nearly half a century Sir Roy Strong has been at the forefront of the British arts world, yet little is known about his life prior to the Swinging Sixties when he burst onto the scene as the revolutionary director of the National Portrait Gallery at the age of just thirty-one. In conversation with the current Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Sandy Nairne, Sir Roy discusses his formative years and tells the story of his journey as ‘a young man from nowhere who went somewhere.’
