Van Dyck’s magnificent self-portrait has embarked on a major, three year tour, celebrating its acquisition for the nation in 2014. The tour gives visitors in Margate, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Edinburgh and London the chance to see the portrait, and appreciate this important work in the context of British history and art.

CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY: Modern Visionaries: Van Dyck and the Artists’ Eye
Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle
28 January – 4 June 2017

Inspired by the remarkably innovative style of Sir Anthony van Dyck's last self-portrait, this exhibition pairs the painting with works by major artists of the 20th and 21st century. Including the likes of Francis Bacon, L.S. Lowry, Sarah Lucas and Chris Ofili, this exhibition asks what it means to confront these artists face-to-face, exploring themes of genius, creativity and the artist's role in society.
