Lewis and his wife sailed for North America in 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. For over five years Lewis made a living by teaching and painting commissioned portraits. In 1941, Lewis recognised that his sight was deteriorating. This was caused by a pituitary tumour that would end his artistic career in 1951, when he became completely blind. Lewis’s writing career continued until his death in March 1957.
