Pop Goes the Easel
Legendary film director Ken Russell is to introduce his seminal documentary Pop Goes the Easel. The film
features four artists from Pop Art Portraits - Peter Blake, Derek Boshier, Peter Phillips and Pauline Boty.
Many of the exhibition’s pictures appear in an elaborate and rhythmic kaleidoscope of images and music from
the worlds of pop, fashion and movies - Peter Blake is seen taking the record out of ‘She’s got A Girl’ and playing it,
Peter Phillips’ abstract shapes are inter-cut with shots of magazines and pinball machines whilst Derek Boshier talks about
the influence of American culture in front of his ‘Man Playing Snooker’. Pauline Boty appears in an extraordinary dream sequence,
chased by a sinister figure down endless circling corridors.
This is an exceptional chance to hear one of Britain’s most controversial film directors talk about one of the most influential films of the 1960’s.

Pop Portrait Techniques
A practical workshop run over two evenings exploring the various techniques used by artists in the Pop Art Portraits exhibition including an overview of silkscreen techniques, collage and painting in acrylic. All materials provided. Run by artist Sadie Lee and Alison Kusner.

Pop Art Photography
A beginner/intermediate-level photography workshop, run over two evenings, with photographer Tom Whichelow. The workshop will examine images in the Pop Art Portraits exhibition followed by technical tutorials on the use of camera, light and film. All equipment and materials provided and participants will produce their own photographic images by the end of the day.

Come and create a collaborative floor drawing to map the Gallery space, focusing on everything but the artwork, including people, objects and the interior of the building. Led by artists Emma Middleton and Viyki Turnbull.

Sunday Session
Create stencils from a photograph of yourself and print colourful modern images onto a bag, inspired by the Pop Art Portraits exhibition, particularly the work of Andy Warhol. Led by artist and lecturer Alison Kusner.

Body Casting
Sunday Session
Create a body cast taking inspiration from Jasper John's work in the Pop Art Portraits exhibition, as well as the life and death masks in the Collection. Will you choose your nose, chin, hand, foot or another body part? Led by artists Emma Middleton and Viyki Turnbull.

Pop Goes the Gallery
Special late night to celebrate the opening week of Pop Art Portraits. Throughout the evening enjoy a themed ‘poptail’ at the bar and experience a unique musical interpretation of Pop Art with Colin Riley’s band Moov bringing together instrumental soundscapes and state-of-the-art VJ-ing. Get your 15 minutes of fame with your own Andy Warhol inspired portrait and see some rare 1960s films featuring artists and musicians from the period’s counter-culture art scene. Pop up to the Gallery’s roof-top Portrait Restaurant and receive a free glass of wine with your dinner when you show your Pop Art exhibition ticket.

Allen Jones in Conversation with Richard Cork
Painter, printmaker and sculptor Allen Jones gained an international reputation for his glamorous and playfully erotic sculptures and prints in the 1960s. Over the past forty years he has exhibited widely in Europe and America and also designed for stage and television. He talks about Pop Art and his extraordinary career with art critic Richard Cork.

Pop Art Portraits
Pop Art defined the ideals and aspirations of a generation. This study day, led by Pop Art Portraits curator Paul Moorhouse, explores the covert, overt and imaginary iconography of the Pop Art portrait. The work of British and American artists, including Paolozzi, Hamilton, Rauschenberg and Warhol will be discussed by leading art historians, curators and critics. Speakers include artist Sir Peter Blake, writers Peter Webb and Marco Livingstone, film curator Tanya Leighton and historian James Hicks.

Pop and Rock Soho Walk
Whilst Pop Art provided the visual backdrop to the swinging sixties, its sound track was the music created and played in the studios, clubs and cafes of Soho. The day begins with a talk on the history of pop and rock and a short tour of the Private View: British Pop and the 60s Art Scene display, and is followed by an entertaining walk through Soho with guide and music historian Andy Charlton.
