What happens when the photograph is transformed into a painted image? Gerhard Richter's portraits, in their conflation of handmade and mechanical processes,
question the status of both painting and photography in contemporary art. With papers by
leading academics and curators this study day, chaired by Paul Moorhouse, curator of the
exhibition, considers various aspects of the artist's practice. Speakers include Alex
Danchev, Dr Wiebke Leister and Dr Craig Smith.

A one day or two evening painting workshop led by artist Sadie Lee. Focusing on Richter's
use of found photographs as starting points for his early portraits, it will examine his
technique and his trademark 'blur' of the painted image. No previous experience necessary
and all materials are provided.

he talks about growing up in East Germany, attending Dresden Art Academy and escaping to the

De'Souza-Hartley. Culminating in a public screening of the work in the Gallery at 17.00
on Friday 17 April.
Sunday Session: Head to Head

Compare and contrast painted people in Gerhard Richter Portraits and Constable Portraits.
Work from your own photograph of a person to make a painting inspired by one of these
exhibitions. Led by Viyki Turnbull and Grace Adam.
