Rebecca West (1932)
National Portrait Gallery (NPG 5693)
© The Estate of Mrs G.A. Wyndham Lewis: The Wyndham Lewis Memorial Trust,

The portrait of Rebecca West was exhibited in 1932 at his ‘Thirty Personalities’ exhibition. West, who was renowned for being “attractive in appearance, with a quick mind, a biting wit and an iconoclastic outlook” is depicted sympathetically. The drawing demonstrates Lewis’s skill as a draughtsman and his ability to capture the features of his sitters. West’s face is shown from two slightly different angles, but there is no distortion in the overall image. The portrait combines elegance and irregularity, and reflects Lewis’s views on personality as complex and various.
