Use of the term non-binary on this website

In our collections search function on this website, we use the term non-binary to describe people who do not identify as either male or female, because their gender sits somewhere between, or outside of, the male/female binary. We have consulted externally on how best to categorise the varied non-binary identities in our database, and while many people do not use non-binary as a primary descriptor, in this context we believe it is appropriate to use it as an umbrella term for people who do not identify themselves as male or female. We are aware that the use of this term is nuanced and we will continue to review and evaluate our terminology, working with advisors and communities to support our understanding. We always value feedback, so please do get in touch with [email protected].
