Both infrared reflectography and x-radiography reveal the pentimenti in this painting. In the x-ray in the centre it is possible to see the changes made to the profile of the hat, and the button near the beard that was painted out as the portrait was completed. In the infrared reflectogram on the right it is possible to see the way in which the fingers in the hand on the left were extended in the final paint layer, which changed the way Gresham's hand clasps the purse, from a tight to a looser hold.
