The development of the hands at both the drawing and painting stage are evident through close comparison of the central x-ray and the infrared reflectogram on the right, whilst comparison of the face in the two images shows the strength of the drawing and the thinness of the final paint layers. The pale dense areas in the x-ray suggest that the sleeves were initially painted with wide cuffs, which were then painted out, and there are further changes in the paint layers evident in the infrared reflectogram that are not visible on the surface.
