Extensive underdrawing is evident in the infrared reflectogram on the right, and this is also visible on the surface through the thinly applied paint. The drawing defines both the features and areas of shadow. The underdrawing is not fluid, which suggests that it was transferred from an earlier drawing or painting, and subsequently small adjustments were made to the outline of the nose and eyebrows. No pentimenti are evident in the x-ray in the centre, but the cradle on the reverse of the panel and some small areas of damage are clearly visible.
