The cradle on the reverse and the additions to the panel along the left edge and corners are clearly visible in the x-ray in the centre. The distinct wood grain of the different wood used for the original boards can also be seen. The underlayers of the costume have been freely applied with the detail of the fabric applied above. The photograph taken in ultra violet light on the right, which was taken before conservation treatment undertaken in 2012, shows at least two campaigns of retouching, and extensive retouching are visible around the edges of the panel.
