The wood grain and the panel joins can be seen in the x-ray image in the centre, along with some woodworm holes. The unusual approach to painting the eyebrows is also evident, with the flesh painted up to the edges after the eyebrows had been painted in. Black underdrawing outlining the facial features can be seen clearly in the infrared reflectogram on the right. The lines are thick and have been confidently applied. These lines likely reinforce a transferred pattern, whilst the drawing in the costume and hand has been applied in a much freer manner.
