Wooden dowels and non-original support 'buttons' can be seen across the joins in the x-ray in the centre, and there are two old drilled holes in the centre of the top edge. The x-ray also shows the thickly applied upper paint layers and the brushwork in the flesh. This contrasts with the fine brushstrokes in the beard and moustache. The pentiment in the hat is evident in the x-ray and on the surface. The photograph on the right, taken in ultra violet light, shows that the face and hands are in good condition with minimal retouching.
