The x-ray in the centre is dominated by a crease in the original canvas, which runs horizontally through the face. The paint has been applied in thin layers in many areas and the modelling around the face and highlights on the textiles are clear. At some point a thin strip of canvas has been removed from the bottom of the canvas and used to mend the damaged top edge, and this is also evident in the photograph taken in ultra violet light on the right. Two large areas of damage and retouching can also be seen in the skirt.
