The x-ray in the centre is dominated by the cradle on the reverse (a wooden structural support); this was removed during conservation treatment undertaken in 2012. Splits and joins in the panel are also clearly evident. Various pentimenti were made during the painting process; for example, to the shoulderline on the left and the left side of the face. The underdrawing in the face, hair and headdress, which can be seen in the infrared reflectogram on the right, corresponds closely to the painted outline. It appears to have been carried out using liquid medium and a brush.
