The areas of damage are clearly evident in the x-ray in the centre and the photograph taken in raking light on the right, both of which date from before conservation treatment undertaken in 2012. The x-ray shows how old fills and restoration extended beyond areas of paint loss in many areas and covered original paint. In the x-ray the brushwork for the mouth appears confused due to the changes in position and the non-original buttons on the reverse and the old inventory number in the lower-left corner are also visible.
