Shadowland: Gordon Anthony Photographs 1926-52
22 July -16 October 1988 – National Portrait Gallery

Shadowland is the first full retrospective exhibition of Gordon Anthony’s work. It embraces all the major themes of his career; his highly acclaimed ballet photographs, his dramatic portraits of film and theatre personalities and his work as official portrait photographer to the Air Ministry in World War II.

Gordon Anthony was born in 1902 in County Wicklow, Ireland. By 1910 his family had moved to London where, like his sister Ninette de Valois, Anthony’s childhood ambition was to become a dancer. But at the age of fourteen he was given his first camera and soon turned his creative attentions to photography. In 1926 Ninette de Valois opened her school of dancing, which became a vital focus of creative activity for British ballet and a point of departure for the founding of the Vic-Wells Company, the nucleus of the Royal Ballet. It was here that Anthony took his first dance photographs, some of which were published in The Dancing Times under the name of Pierrot.

By 1934 Anthony had developed a recognizable studio style based on expressive, low key lighting and shadow projections; recreating the worlds of ballet and the theatre for the pages of society magazines like The Bystander and The Sketch. His features on international start such as Vera Zorina brought him wide acclaim, while his studies of dancers such as Margot Fonteyn and Robert Helpmann played an important part in the popularization of British ballet. His glamorous portraits of London’s theatre personalities enhanced Anthony’s growing reputation; these included photographs of John Gielgud, Terence Rattigan, Peggy Ashcroft and Vivien Leigh.

Shadowland: Gordon Anthony Photographs 1926-52
Exhibition organised by The Royal Pavilion, Art Gallery and Museums, Brighton
22-July to 16 October 1988

Shadowland is the first full retrospective exhibition of Gordon Anthony’s work. It embraces all the major themes of his career; his highly acclaimed ballet photographs, his dramatic portraits of film and theatre personalities and his work as official portrait photographer to the Air Ministry in World War II. The National Portrait Gallery is the London venue for this exhibition, which was researched and organised by David Chandler, Assistant Exhibition organiser at the Photographer’s Gallery.

In association with the exhibition, the Education Department is holding a two week summer workshop, ‘Shadowplay’ for children and adults. The young contemporary photographer Liam Woon will be making portraits using dramatic lighting and ‘shadowplay’ to echo the photographic style characteristic of Gordon Anthony’s work in the 1930s. The workshops will involve helping to set up the studio, organise lighting and create the shadow background.

Press extracts

Dancing Times ‘Speaking of Dance: Gordon Anthony’, August 1988 - Barbara Newman

‘To imagine dancers are easy to photograph is one of those beautiful illusions of life.’

The Independent
‘Gordon Anthony Obituary’, 27th July 1989 – Peter Brinson

‘As a photographer he stood on the expressionist side of the modernist movement, noted for his use of light and shadow, for his improvisation and meticulous efforts to convey in still pictures the essence of a production, of a dancer’s part and of dance movement. His work reflects his knowledge of dance, but also his frustrated dance ambitions.’

The British Journal of Photography ‘Transported to a world of fantasy – Gordon Anthony: portraits and dance’ 15th September 1988 – Walter Nurnberg

‘The exhibition of Gordon Anthony’s work is not only an historical event, but indeed a pleasurable challenge to the modern eye. At a time when our vision is constantly exposed to an onslaught of synthetic colour (not least by television), his masterly use of black-and-white photographs reminds us afresh of its creative and suggestive power.’

‘The title of the exhibition Shadowland obviously refers to Gordon Anthony’s recurrent and brilliant use of background projection. Although his technique was at the time already used occasionally in commercial photography, he certainly developed it much further in his portrait and ballet scenes, to become a catalyst to stir the imagination.’
