In 1820, King George IV attempted to divorce his estranged wife, Caroline of Brunswick. This caused a public outcry as people believed Caroline was being treated unfairly. The queen’s cause was also conflated with the campaign for political reform and the right to vote, for which Caroline became an unlikely figurehead. Jugs such as this were purchased to show support for the queen and to criticise the corruption of politicians and the hypocrisy of the king.
