Lost-wax process

The traditional and still favourite method for casting {bronze|GG_Bronze}. The shape is first modelled in wax and then surrounded by a mould of heat-resisting material. The mould is baked to dry it and melt out the wax, leaving a negative impression of the work which is then filled in with molten metal. After cooling, the mould is broken open and the newly made sculpture cleaned, {chased|GG_Chasing} and polished.
