Napoleon
Unlike his English targets, Gillray was never able to observe Napoleon in the flesh; he relied on French engravings to provide images on which to base his caricatures. Early prints such as Buonaparté leaving Egypt (D12727) show the influence of authentic portraits, but it is in the character of 'Little Boney', first seen on 1 January 1803, that Gillray established a lasting image that was taken up by other caricaturists. The earliest appearance of this characterisation was in German nonchalence - or - the vexation of little Boney (D12798), but the diminutive, capering, ranting figure in Maniac-ravings - or - little Boney in a strong fit (D12811) perhaps best expresses the way in which the character developed.
