Their remit includes crime policy, national security and immigration and citizenship for the UK. William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne became the first Home Secretary in 1782. Other notable Home Secretaries include Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and Sir Robert Peel, who established the Metropolitan Police Force in 1929.
