The Kit-cat Club Portraits

These portraits are part of a group of 42, showing members of the most influential social and political club of the early 18th century. The members, all men, met in the tavern of Christopher Cat, a pastry chef. There, they drank, ate his famous mutton pies, known as ‘Kit cats’, and made plans to change the world. All the members shared similar political views and many were involved in writing, publishing or promoting literature. Members commissioned their portraits from the leading painter Sir Godfrey Kneller as gifts for the founder, Jacob Tonson. Their identical size and framing suggested the equal footing on which dukes, businessmen, authors and politicians met: apparently the embodiment of polite, cultured society.
