Making the Modern World

From the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948 to the invention of the World Wide Web in 1989, the events and transformations of these decades directly impact our lives today. Post-war social reforms led to a more tolerant society. From 1967, male homosexuality ceased to be a criminal offence. While most of the British Empire had been dismantled by the mid-1960s, legacies of the imperial past endured. Immigration enriched Britain, often in the face of racism. Creativity and culture also flourished, and the ‘Swinging Sixties’ saw a boom in youthful self-expression in music, fashion and art. Many of those represented in these portraits still actively contribute to British life. The displays are presented thematically, and will change on a regular basis to protect light-sensitive works.
