Room 1 at the National Portrait Gallery

The Early Tudors

This second floor room begins the chronological sequence of Galleries and covers the Tudor dynasty from the defeat of Richard III at Bosworth Field by Henry Tudor, later crowned Henry VII, in 1485 through the reign of Henry VIII to his death in 1547 and his succession. A large cartoon of Henry VIII by Holbein dominates the room. There are portraits of the wives of Henry VIII and elsewhere portraits of the central figures of the period, such as More and Cranmer. A viewing device allows visitors to see 'corrected' the anamorphic portrait of Edward VI in the middle of the room.
