Room 26 at the National Portrait Gallery

Portraits by G.F. Watts

Aside from the famous portrait of his first wife, Ellen Terry, the works in this room by G.F. Watts form part of his plan to create a 'Hall of Fame' of his most eminent contemporaries. Watts bequeathed, the paintings to the Gallery and they are now displayed here. Watts formed his plan for a series of 'historical portraits' around 1850 and continued to add to it throughout his long career. They are consistent in focussing on the head or face of the sitter, rather than on dress or accessories.
