Century Club

From 1865-81 in Lincoln's Inn Chambers, and then at 6 Pall Mall Place, the members of the Century Club met to discuss issues regarding social reform, including The 1867 Reform Act and The University Reforms- something they saw as a personal cause. The members, the majority of whom were Oxbridge educated and already belonged to societies such as The Apostles and The Old Morality Society, were elected by a committee vote. They would meet on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, paying one guinea a year in subscriptions, to freely discuss the most serious matters of the day. Outside of the club, many members worked either in Law or Politics, or were writers for publications such as The Times and The Economist. By 1881, the club's membership numbers had diminished as individuals moved on, with many joining the newly established National Liberal Club.
