Bell was a leading surgeon in Edinburgh's medical community. He was particularly well known for his lectures and teaching, and is now regarded as a pioneer of modern vascular surgery. Bell was also a great art lover and illustrated his published anatomy textbooks himself. He spent his later years in Rome where he was a regular visitor to the eminent Italian sculptor Antonio Canova's studio.
