Stanislawa Bevan (née de Karlowska)

(1876-1952), Painter

Sitter in 2 portraits
Polish-born Stanislawa trained at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1896. A painter of townscapes, interiors and still-lifes, she combined a modernist concentration on colour and form with elements of Polish folk art. Although closely associated with both the Fitzroy Street and Camden Town groups, as a woman she was not eligible for membership of either. In 1914, she was elected a member of the London Group, exhibiting with them for many decades. From 1900 she exhibited with the Women's International Art Club, the New English Art Club and the Allied Artists' Association. She sold relatively few works in her lifetime and her achievements were often overshadowed by those of her husband, Robert Bevan.
