(1851-1933), Lawyer and Conservative politician; MP for Bethnal Green North East

Lawyer and politician; born and educated in Bombay, Bhownaggree came to London in 1881 to train as a barrister. Settled in England, he became Conservative MP for North East Bethnal Green in 1895 and was for many years the leading figure of Indian origin in British public life. Only the second Indian to sit as an MP, Bhownaggree was a staunch supporter of British rule in the Sub-Continent and of Britain's imperial interests in general.
