Captain of the Bounty; sailing master on Cook's second voyage. In 1787, Bligh was sent to introduce the breadfruit from Tahiti into the West Indes; though his crew mutinied and cast him adrift in an open boat, he succeeded in reaching Java with 18 companions after a voyage of three months. Governor of New South Wales, 1805-8.
