Margaret Grace Bondfield

(1873-1953), Trade unionist, campaigner for women's interests and politician; MP for Wallsend, Northampton and first woman cabinet minister

Trade union leader and politician. Apprenticed in the drapery trade, Margaret Bondfield became assistant secretary in the National Union of Shop Assistants in 1898, rising through various offices to become the first woman chairman of the TUC in 1923. Labour MP for Northampton (1923-4) and Wallsend (1926-31), as Minister of Labour (1929-31) she was the first British woman cabinet minister.
